It’s not a flashy part, but without it, you'd be chasing loose fasteners and worn-out assemblies constantly.

When this LOCKING component starts to wear out or fails, you're going to notice it. The most common symptom is that whatever it's supposed to be holding tight will start to loosen up. If it's on a rotating shaft, you might pick up on some new play or even a slight wobble that wasn't there before. On a static connection, you'll probably hear a new clunk or rattle developing, especially when the rig is under load. Ignoring it is just asking for trouble; a loose connection can quickly lead to accelerated wear on adjacent components, or even a catastrophic failure of a larger assembly, so it's worth investigating any new noises or movements.

Swapping out one of these isn't usually a complicated job, but it's definitely a 'do it right' situation. Always make sure the mating surfaces are clean and free of burrs or damage; sometimes a failed LOCKING piece can score the shaft or the nut it was supposed to secure. And here's the kicker: always, always use the correct torque specification for the fastener it's associated with. Over-tightening can deform the LOCKING component, making it ineffective, while under-tightening defeats its entire purpose. It's a small investment in time and a new part that saves you from much bigger headaches down the line.
