When this piston starts wearing out, you’ll definitely notice it. Usually what happens is the impact energy drops off, meaning your penetration rate slows right down. You might hear a change in the drill's sound too – sometimes a duller thud, or even a bit of a clatter if things are really loose. We've seen rigs where the operator just can't get the bit to bite like it used to, and often, it's this component losing its oomph. Pressure fluctuations in the percussion circuit can also be a dead giveaway, as clearances increase and the hydraulic pulses aren't as crisp.

If you're pulling one of these out, make sure you're not just swapping it and calling it a day. Always give the cylinder bore a good, hard look for scoring or ovality; a new piston won't last long in a worn-out bore. And don't forget to check the condition of the front head components and the shank adapter. A worn shank can cause premature wear on the piston's striking face, which is a common oversight. Proper lubrication is key, too – sometimes issues stem from the feed not getting enough grease or oil where it needs to be.
