KEY, PARALLEL

344 738 13C KEY, PARALLEL is one of those small but absolutely critical pieces that keeps things from spinning free. You'll find these typically locking a gear, a pulley, or a coupling onto a shaft, making sure the torque actually gets transmitted from one component to the other. Without it, you'd just have a shaft turning inside a hub, going nowhere, or worse, just slipping and grinding itself to bits inside the keyway.

When these keys start to wear down, or if one shears off completely, you'll usually notice a pretty distinct clunking or grinding sound coming from the affected drive. Sometimes it's more subtle, just a bit of lost power or a component that's not quite keeping up with its mate, leading to sluggish movement. If it's a drive component, you might see the shaft turning but the gear or pulley it's supposed to drive just lagging, or even sitting still, which obviously isn't going to work right.

Replacing a KEY, PARALLEL isn't usually a major job, but getting the old one out can sometimes be a real pain if it's seized or sheared flush. Always make sure the keyway in both the shaft and the hub are clean and free of burrs before you tap the new one in. And don't forget to give the keyway itself a good look for any damage or deformation; a new key won't last long if the groove it sits in is already chewed up.
