Essentially, it acts as a sacrificial wear surface, protecting the more expensive main components from getting chewed up by friction and misalignment.

When this side ring starts to wear down, you’ll definitely notice things getting a bit sloppy in that area. The clearances open up, and whatever it’s supposed to be guiding will start moving around more than it should. Usually, what happens is you'll pick up a new knocking or clunking sound, especially when the component changes direction or is under load. You might also start seeing accelerated wear on the main rod or bore it's meant to protect, which is a pretty clear indicator it’s past its service life.

Swapping one of these out isn't usually a complex job, but it's absolutely crucial to thoroughly inspect the mating surfaces it runs against. Don't just throw a new one in if the rod or bore it guides is already scored or damaged; you’ll just end up wearing out the new ring prematurely. Always check for any burrs or sharp edges on the housing or the rod that could damage the new ring during installation or even once it's running. And make sure you're using the right installation tools to avoid deforming it before it even gets to work.
