550 566 24 SUCTION HEAD is typically the main line drawing hydraulic oil from the tank into the primary pump. It's a critical path, making sure that pump gets a steady, air-free supply of fluid. If this line isn't doing its job, the whole hydraulic system starves, plain and simple. It's designed to handle the vacuum without collapsing, which is tougher than it sounds when you've got thick oil and varying temperatures.

When this suction line starts to give up the ghost, you'll usually notice the hydraulic pump getting noisy – that distinct cavitation whine, almost like it's chewing on gravel. That's air getting pulled in, or the line collapsing, restricting flow. You might also see the rig's movements become sluggish or inconsistent, especially under load, because the pump just isn't getting enough oil. Sometimes, if it's a hard line, you'll just get a slow leak at a fitting, but with a hose, it's often more about internal delamination or a pinhole sucking air.

When you're replacing one of these, don't just yank it off and slap a new one on. Take a good look at the old one, especially where it might have rubbed against something or been kinked. And for crying out loud, make sure your clamps are good and tight, but don't go crazy and strip them out. A lot of guys forget to check the condition of the O-rings or sealing surfaces on the fittings themselves; a new hose won't fix an old, pitted flange.
