When this packing starts to go, you'll usually notice it first as a slow weep of oil around the rod or piston gland. That's your early warning. If you let it go, you'll start seeing cylinder drift – the boom might slowly sag, or the feed won't hold its position when the hydraulics are neutral. Sometimes, you'll even get a bit of chatter or inconsistent movement because the pressure isn't holding steady internally, which can really mess with your drilling accuracy.

Replacing these isn't rocket science, but getting it right matters. Always make sure the bore or rod surface you're installing it into is clean and free of nicks or burrs – even a tiny scratch can tear a new packing in no time. And don't forget to give it a light coat of clean hydraulic oil before installation; it helps prevent damage during assembly and gets it sealing properly right from the start. Skipping that little step can lead to an early failure.
