The most common thing is a distinct squealing or grinding noise coming from the undercarriage, especially when the rig is tracking. Sometimes, you'll see the track chain itself start to sag more than usual, or even jump off the idler if it's really bad. That's because the bearings inside are shot, or the idler wheel itself is worn down, losing its proper profile. You might also feel a bit of a 'clunk' or 'thump' as the machine moves, particularly over uneven ground, indicating excessive play.

Replacing an idler isn't the worst job, but it's not a quick one either. Always check the track tensioning cylinder and its seals when you're in there; they often take a beating too and sometimes get overlooked. Make sure the new idler's mounting points are clean and free of debris before installation. And for crying out loud, grease it properly after you've got it all back together and tensioned. A little bit of preventative maintenance goes a long way here.
