Full Technical Description
550 855 96C SIGHT GLASS, OIL is essentially a clear window, usually made of tough plastic or glass, that screws or bolts into a tank or gearbox. Its whole job is to let you visually confirm the fluid level inside without having to open anything up or stick a dipstick in. On a drill rig, that means a quick glance at your hydraulic tank, compressor oil reservoir, or even some gearboxes can tell you if you're running low, which is way faster and cleaner than fumbling around with caps and rags. It's about making those daily checks efficient.
When these oil sight glasses start to fail, you'll usually notice one of two things. Either the material itself gets cloudy or discolored over time from heat and oil exposure, making it impossible to actually see the level clearly. Or, and this is the more urgent one, it starts leaking. You'll see a slow weep of oil around the threads or the seal, often just a greasy film at first, but it can turn into a steady drip if left alone. Sometimes the plastic cracks from impact or just old age, and then you've got a proper leak on your hands.
Swapping one out isn't a big job, but you absolutely need to make sure the system's depressurized and drained down below the sight glass level before you touch it. Don't skip that step. When you pull the old one, take a good look at the threads or the sealing surface on the tank – often, there's old sealant or a bit of corrosion that needs to be cleaned off thoroughly. That's a common oversight that leads to a new sight glass leaking right away. Use the correct thread sealant if it's a tapered thread, or just ensure the new O-ring is seated properly if it's a flange type.
