It contains critical fluid passages that are essential for generating the percussive force and turning the drill steel. The BACK PLANE also serves as the primary mounting point for high-pressure hoses and accumulators, making its structural integrity vital for the entire drilling system.

A failure in the BACK PLANE, such as a crack or a warped sealing surface, can lead to significant performance loss. Internal pressure leaks between circuits will rob the piston of its impact energy, resulting in slower drilling and increased stress on other components. External leaks not only waste expensive hydraulic oil but also pose a serious slip hazard for personnel working around the rig.

Look for oil weeping from the rear of the drifter or a gradual drop in penetration rate as early signs of a problem. During service, carefully inspect for any hairline cracks, especially around the threaded ports. When installing a new BACK PLANE, always use fresh seals and tighten the retaining bolts in a cross pattern to ensure it seats evenly without distortion.
