It engages with pinion gears to step down speed from the motor and multiply the torque delivered to the shank adapter. The integrity of this gear is directly linked to the drifter's ability to turn the drill string, especially under high load in challenging ground.

Gradual wear on the gear teeth leads to inefficient power transmission, resulting in weak or inconsistent rotation and slower drilling. A heavily worn gear introduces excessive play, or backlash, into the rotation, which can make collaring a hole accurately very difficult. A sudden failure, like a broken tooth, will stop the drilling operation and can cause extensive secondary damage to other gears and bearings in the housing.

Pay attention to any grinding or whining sounds coming from the drifter during rotation, as this often points to gear wear. When you change the gear oil, inspect it for fine metal shavings, which is a strong indicator of internal component wear. For a lasting repair, it is good practice to replace the mating gears and associated bearings at the same time as the NUT, CROWN gear.
