Its primary function is to convert the high-speed input from the hydraulic motor into the high-torque, lower-speed rotation needed to turn the drill steel. The precise meshing of its gear teeth with the matching pinion is what drives the entire drilling process forward.

Wear on the gear teeth directly reduces the efficiency of the rotation unit, leading to a loss of torque at the drill bit and slower penetration rates. If left unchecked, excessive wear or a broken tooth can cause the gearbox to seize, resulting in major downtime and a costly rebuild of the entire drifter. The integrity of this single gear is fundamental to the drill's overall reliability.

Listen for unusual grinding noises from the drifter and check for metal particles during gear oil changes, as these are early signs of wear. When replacement is necessary, it is critical to replace both the CROWN WHEEL and its matching pinion as a set. Installing a new CROWN WHEEL with a worn pinion will lead to premature failure of the new gear.
