882 543 79 VALVE, CHECK, PILOT OPERATED is the gatekeeper for hydraulic pressure in a specific circuit on your rig. It's designed to hold a cylinder, like a boom or a feed cylinder, firmly in place until it gets a signal to release. Essentially, it prevents things from drifting or sagging under their own weight or external forces. When pilot pressure from another part of the hydraulic system hits it, the valve opens up, allowing oil to flow and the cylinder to move. Without it, you’d have a hard time keeping anything steady.

When one of these starts acting up, you'll usually notice some slop in the system. The most common giveaway is drift – your boom might slowly sag, or a feed cylinder could creep when it should be locked solid. Sometimes, you'll get a jerky or inconsistent response when you try to actuate that function, almost like it's fighting itself. If the internal check or pilot spool is sticking, you might even hear a faint chattering or feel a slight hesitation in the hydraulic circuit as it tries to open or close, and the pressure gauge for that function might not hold steady.

Swapping one of these out isn't typically a huge ordeal, but always make sure the area around it is spotless before you start disconnecting lines. You really don't want any grit getting into your clean hydraulic system. When you're installing the new valve, pay close attention to the pilot line connection; it’s easy to get it mixed up if you’re rushing, and then the valve won't operate correctly. After everything's buttoned up, cycle the function a few times to purge any trapped air and confirm it's holding pressure like it should.
