Full Technical Description
BG 008 936 16A INDICATOR, LEVEL is what gives you a quick visual on your hydraulic oil level, or sometimes even fuel or water, depending on where it’s installed. On a rig, it’s usually sitting on the side of the main hydraulic tank. It’s not just a fancy gauge; it’s your first line of defense against running a pump dry or cavitating the system. You need to know if you've got enough fluid in there before you even think about firing up the machine, or if you're losing oil somewhere. Some of these even have a low-level switch built into them that'll trigger an alarm or shut things down if the level drops too far.
When this level indicator starts acting up, you’ll usually notice one of a few things. The most common issue is it just gets stuck, either showing full all the time or empty, even when you know that’s not right. That’s a problem because you could be running critically low on hydraulic oil and not even know it until a pump starts whining or you get an overheat alarm. Sometimes, the sight glass itself gets cloudy or discolored over time, making it impossible to read. Or, if it’s one with an electrical switch, you might start getting false low-level warnings, or worse, no warning at all when you actually need one. A leak around the mounting flange is another dead giveaway it’s time for a change.
Replacing one of these isn't usually a huge job, but you definitely want to make sure the tank is drained below the mounting point, or you're going to have a real mess on your hands. Always check the O-ring or gasket when you pull the old one out; sometimes that's the real culprit for a leak, not the indicator itself. When you put the new one in, don't just crank it down. Snug it up, but don't overtighten, especially if it's plastic or has a plastic housing. And if it's got an electrical connection, give that a quick once-over for corrosion or loose wires while you're in there. It’s a simple part, but it saves you a lot of grief down the road.
